There’s a certain scent that hits you when you walk through our door—earthy, spicy, a little sweet. It’s the scent of roots and resins, of oils and incense, of magic alive and well. People often ask us, “What is this place?” And we smile, because what they’re feeling is something old, something real. This isn’t just a witchcraft shop. This is a botanica.
But what does that actually mean?
A real botanica is more than shelves lined with candles or herbs in jars. It’s a living, working space of tradition, knowledge, and community. A true botanica doesn’t just sell magic—it serves it. Tends it. Teaches it. Protects it. And… gets everyone involved.
At Mama’s Magic & Mojo, our roots go deep. For 30 years, we’ve been steeped in the practices of traditional witchcraft, British & Irish folk magic, New Orleans Voodoo and conjure, with lineages that stretch through British, Creole, Irish, and Cherokee soil. We’re not just resellers – we’re practitioners. Every oil, powder, wash, and charm that leaves our counter is made with reverence and skill, by people who live these heritages and walk these paths, every… single…day.
There are many, many shops, stores and stallholders out there that are in it to make a fast buck. Those who have opened a shop for it to be trendy or for it to make a huge profit and not because they truly believe in what they do. This is not our way. Our family and the entire shop team has the ethos that we draw on our heritages, we draw on our legacies and we draw on generations of wisdom.
So now you know all that, here’s what makes a real botanica:
1. Experience, not aesthetics
A true botanica isn’t curated for Instagram—it’s built on decades of hands-on work. Our team shares over 250 years of combined experience in the craft. That means we’ve lived through life’s sunny days and also it’s storms, and we know how to guide others through theirs.
2. Cultural integrity
We honour the cultures and communities our practices come from. That means respecting tradition, giving credit where it’s due, and never reducing sacred work to a trend. Magic isn’t “one size fits all”—and a real botanica will always make space for that truth. With 4 heritages all coming under one roof, we are able to bring forth our family lineages of wisdom and knowledge to be able to make sure that each culture is honoured and respected.
3. A working magical space
We do the work here. Not out the back, not in a spare room, not at home. Here. Everything is done within the botanica itself. Readings, rootwork, spiritual cleansings, candle rituals, community altars—it’s all happening in our shop, in front of anyone who is in the shop at the time. This isn’t a passive storefront. It’s a living magical hub.
4. Education and empowerment
We believe knowledge is power—and it’s meant to be shared. Whether through workshops, online courses, retreat days or one-on-one guidance, we teach our paths and cultures the old way: honestly, humbly, with both head and heart. Knowledge shouldn’t be in the hands of gatekeepers, otherwise our heritages, our cultures, our paths… will be lost. And that isn’t something we ever want to happen.
5. Community care
A botanica is a refuge as much as a resource. We’ve seen tears, laughter, breakthroughs, and blessings happen right in the shop itself. Real magic isn’t separate from real life and we hold space for both.
We are not Wiccan and make no apologies for that, but all are welcome in the shop, no matter what your path, faith, religion or culture. So, next time you step into Mama’s Magic & Mojo, know that you’re entering a place with roots. A place that’s earned its bones, holds its traditions close, and welcomes you with open arms (and as well as a cup of tea and a slice of cake). When you walk through our doors, you’ll be welcomed… home.
